Peak District Walk – Eyam Moor & Wet Withens Stone Circle

In this walk we take in some of the history and sights up on Eyam Moor and the surrounding valleys. Eyam Village is a fascinating place that saw an outbreak of the bubonic plague in 1665, there is a hall and museum there which house some very interesting stories and are well worth a detour. We began by parking up on Sir William Hill road at the layby near grid reference SK 2245 7803. We then headed south towards Eyam to the first point of interest on the route, Mompesson’s Well. The well or spring here was used during the time of the Plague, The villagers of Eyam were enduring a self imposed quarantine and the well was used as a drop/exchange point, goods bought in were paid for using coins sterilised in vinegar.

After visiting Mompesson’s Well we headed west along the road to take the path back north at SK 2171 7728, this path passes Ladywash Mine which was a mixed ore mine worked until 1979. Find out more over at http://www.mindat.org/

Sir William Hill Trig Point

The he next stop was the trig point at the top of Sir William Hill, in good weather the views from here are fantastic. Sir William Hill and Eyam Moor are a noticeable transition point between the gritstone moorland of the Dark Peak and the limestone farmland to the south. From the trig you can see features like Kinder Scout, The Great Ridge, Ladybower reservoir (just) and numerous gritstone edges including Stanage and Bamford.

Bretton Clough

We then descending in to Bretton Clough. After walking through the village of Abney we make our way down the very picturesque Abney Clough before climbing up on to the moors again to find the Wet Withens Stone Circle.
